Reggae Legend
Singer/songwriter Toyin Adekale’s musical career began at the tender age of 15, with local band Instigators, under the guidance of the legendary father of sound systems, Fatman. This introduced Toyin to the love of backing vocals, lending her live backing vocal services to some of Jamaica’s finest legends on stage and in the studio.
Though rooted in reggae music (specifically Roots and Lovers Rock), Toyin covered an array of genres, including Soul, Jazz, Pop, RnB, Gospel, and Afrobeat, which is evident in her own unique style. Toyin’s collaborations have also blended Reggae with Opera with Chinese Opera sensation, Jane Marie and Indian Bangra king Tubsy Dholki Walla. Toyin’s vocals are described as sultry, smooth, and lyrically her penmanship paints pictures through her relatable songs.
Toyin is the founder and director for UK’s premier reggae gospel choir, Talithavoices Choir (UK and US branch), also partner and co-founder of the Lovers Rock Reunion concert series.
In obtaining her Bachelors of Science in Entertainment Business, Toyin has worn other hats in the industry from running her own vocal agency and management to events coordination.
Her passion for storytelling through music led to her first book of inspirational short stories, “I Do, Do You?”. Toyin traveled the world sharing her music with dignitaries and royalty, sharing her stories in songs, and now inspired to extend motivational stories for children as well as adults, in this her first children’s book, “The Crystal City” and “Money Loves Me”.
The pandemic inspired her best selling book to date, “My Mind Wide Open – Surviving Mental Lockdown.”
Toyin’s story of overcoming adversity is one of inspiration and direction. Her experiences and philosophy on finding peace within a storm is for all ages, from all walks of life and challenges. From domestic abuse, to poverty, bereavement, health issues, loneliness, lack of confidence and relationships, both intimate, spiritual and even financial.
Toyin encompasses this in her books as she reveals her relationship with money and time with a story of rags to riches to rags and then balance, that many will relate to. Toyin’s travels all over the world has given her a gift of connectivity and empathy, with a diverse community as her lifestyle.
